H.E.A.L. I.T. · Session Five

Inclusivity

Who Is in the Room. And Who Was Left at the Door.

Most people believe they are inclusive. And most of us have blind spots we have never been given the chance to see. This session makes the invisible visible.

The Gap Between Intention and Impact

Inclusion Is a Skill, Not a Value

Believing in inclusion and practising it are two different things. You can value fairness deeply and still carry habits that leave people out. You can intend to make room for everyone and still default to the familiar, the comfortable, the people who think and communicate the way you do. These are human patterns, and they run in all of us.

The problem is that good intentions, on their own, do not change anything. The person who was excluded does not feel your intention. They feel the result. This session bridges that gap by helping you see your own patterns of inclusion and exclusion clearly, and giving you practical tools to change them.

What You Will Experience

Virtual Reality That Puts You Inside It

This session uses virtual reality and interactive, scenario-based learning to do something no lecture or discussion can: it places you inside the experience of exclusion and inclusion in real time.

You will move through simulated situations where you make decisions and watch the consequences unfold. Who benefits from the choice you just made? Who was left out? What assumption were you operating from? These are not hypothetical questions. You see the answers play out in front of you, and you feel the impact of your choices in a way that stays with you long after the session ends.

The scenarios are drawn from real life: workplace dynamics, community settings, everyday interactions. You will recognize the situations because they mirror the ones you navigate all the time. The difference is that in this environment, you get to see what you normally miss, the exclusion that happens at the edges, the decisions that feel neutral to you but feel entirely different to the person on the other side of them.

By this point in the H.E.A.L. I.T. journey, you have built the self-awareness, the equity understanding, the antiracism practice, and the relational skills to engage with this material at a deep level. This session brings all of that together and puts it into practice.

A Core Distinction

The Difference Between Invitation and Belonging

Inclusion says: "You can come in."

Belonging says: "This space was built with you in mind."

You can invite someone into a conversation and still centre only certain voices. You can open a door and leave every other barrier intact. You can diversify a room and still run it by the same unwritten rules that serve the people who were always there.

Belonging is different. Belonging means the environment itself has been examined and reshaped. The norms, the communication habits, the decision-making patterns, the unwritten expectations, all of it has been looked at with honest eyes and adjusted so that the full range of people who enter that space can contribute, be heard, and feel that they matter.

This session teaches you to recognize the difference and to build for belonging in every space you are part of.

What You Walk Away With

A Practised Skill You Use Every Day

After this session, you will see things you did not see before. You will notice who is not at the table. You will catch the assumption behind the decision. You will recognize when "the way things are done" is actually "the way things are done for people like me."

You will also have practised building something different. The VR scenarios give you hands-on experience with making inclusive choices in real time, under pressure, in situations that mirror your actual life. That practice is what turns a value into a competency.

Three questions will stay with you:

Who does this serve?

Who does this leave out?

What am I willing to do differently?

These questions work in a board meeting, a classroom, a family dinner, a hiring process, or any moment where your choices affect other people. Which is most moments.

Who This Is For

  • Anyone who values inclusion and wants to close the gap between what they believe and how they actually show up in practice
  • People in healthcare, education, community work, or any field where the people they serve come from backgrounds different from their own
  • Individuals who have been the only one in a room and know what it costs to perform belonging in a space that was never built with them in mind
  • Anyone who makes decisions that affect other people and wants to make those decisions with greater awareness of who benefits and who does not
  • People who have participated in inclusion training before and left feeling like it never moved past theory into something they could actually use

After this session, you will never see a room the same way again. You will see who is there, who is missing, and what you can do about it.
